America’s soybean farmers didn’t just adopt biodiesel—they helped create the industry. Through soybean checkoff investments spanning more than three decades, farmers funded the research, fuel testing, engine validation, market development, and policy efforts that transformed biodiesel from an emerging technology into a cornerstone of the nation’s renewable fuels industry.
Today, those investments continue to pay dividends. Biodiesel is estimated to contribute up to 10% of the value of every bushel of soybeans by creating a strong, reliable market for soybean oil. When combined with renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), these biofuel markets now account for roughly half of all domestic soybean oil demand, creating new opportunities for soybean growers while strengthening rural economies and U.S. energy security.
For farmers who fuel their own tractors, combines, trucks, and equipment with biodiesel blends, the benefits come full circle. They are using a renewable fuel made in large part from the crops they grow—supporting American agriculture while reducing emissions and reinforcing demand for future soybean harvests.
