MiABC, Thumb BioEnergy Host Educational Tour

The Michigan Advanced Biofuels Coalition (MiABC) partnered with Thumb BioEnergy, the Michigan Soybean Association, and Clean Fuels Michigan to host an education session and tour of Thumb BioEnergy’s facility in Sandusky, Michigan. Participants were treated to a Biodiesel 101 presentation that covered what biodiesel is, what it is made from, how it is made, and why diesel operators use the fuel. Attendees were also treated to a tour of Thumb BioEnergy’s facility to see first-hand how ultra-low-carbon biodiesel is made right here in Michigan.

Thumb BioEnergy is a BQ-9000-accredited biodiesel producer that can manufacture up to a million gallons of ultra-low-carbon biodiesel from used cooking oil (UCO) collected by the company’s specialized fleet of B20-powered collection vehicles. Once collected and filtered, the UCO is processed into ASTM-quality biodiesel at their solar-powered facility.

Thumb BioEnergy’s Vice President of Operations, Alex Ritter (Right), discusses the production process used to make biodiesel during the tour. Alex proudly fuels his Chevrolet Duramax with blends up to B70 – a low-carbon blend of 70% biodiesel blended with petroleum diesel.

In addition to powering its facility on solar energy, Thumb BioEnergy fuels its fleet of six collection trucks on B20 biodiesela lower-carbon blend of 20% biodiesel mixed with diesel fuel.

An on-site testing lab combined with a 3rd party lab allows Thumb BioEnergy (TBE) to ensure consistent fuel quality across its operations. TBE is proud to be a BQ-9000 accredited producer of high-quality, low-carbon biodiesel made from used cooking oil collected and processed in the Thumb of Michigan.
