MiABC, Stakeholders Participate in American Great Lakes Ports Association Annual Conference

The Michigan Advanced Biofuels Coalition (MiABC) was in Chicago for the American Great Lakes Ports Association’s 2025 Annual Conference last week. Technical Director Pete Probst and Sustainability and Outreach Director Bailey Arnold participated in two days of engaging sessions and conversations around the challenges and opportunities facing ports on the Great Lakes.

Pete and Bailey joined ship captains, federally-appointed administrators, port authority, consultants, vessel operators, business owners, stakeholders, and more at the event. MiABC’s message was clear: that biodiesel and renewable diesel are a high-quality, low-carbon fuels available to help port operators lower emissions now.

Supporting Our Friends At Port Detroit

In addition to attending the conference to network and promote advanced biofuels as an immediate solution, MiABC supported the Port of Detroit’s spotlight session, which featured the launch of the port district’s new “Port Detroit” brand and renewed mission to advance southeast Michigan’s maritime and related industries with the purpose of delivering prosperity and economic benefit to our citizens and businesses.

Executive Director Mark Schrupp introduced the port’s decarbonization efforts and launched the district’s new brand while Sustainability Manager Taylor Mitchell highlighted her first-hand experience with the challenges facing Detroiters exposed to poor air quality in the areas surrounding the port and adjacent industrial areas. Taylor and Mark also presented a list of opportunities to address the concerns, including immediate use of low-carbon fuels such as biodiesel and renewable diesel.
